Because it's earth day today, I thought I would talk a bit about the environment, the animal industry, global warming etc... because these are some of the biggest issues facing the extinction of our planet. Its so important that we educate ourselves about these topics, and take immediate action, because there is no "Planet B".
We currently have candidates running for president who don't believe in global warming, and none of our other candidates are willing to talk about it in depth.
As you probably know, I'm vegan ( wether or not you were aware of that it is my duty as a vegan to tell you that fact as many times as possible ;-) ) and there are so many reasons for me to be.
"Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of green house gas emissions, which is more than the combined exhaust from all transportation" (sourced from the food and agriculture organization). And yes, that means every single car, bus, plane, train, and boat emits less than the animal industry. Cows emit 150 billion gallons of methane a day, and methane is 86 times more toxic than carbon dioxide. And the emissions are projected to increase by 80% by 2050.
Currently, over 3,000 animals are killed every second in slaughterhouses world wide, and over 56 billion farm animals are killed each year for consumption. This over production of animals is disgusting. In the meat, dairy, and egg industry, animals are filled with hormones to make them grow as large as possible as fast as possible. This can cause them heart problems, skeletal problems, and lung problems. We forget that animals can feel fear and pain, for us, they often turn into nothing more than a slab of meat, or a gallon of milk. At egg farms, male chicks are unnecessary, and so they are ground up alive in a saw, or thrown in the trash STILL ALIVE. Female cows are violently artificially impregnated each year, and as soon as they give birth their babies are taken away from them. We then drink the milk meant for the calf, and they are fed some unnatural substance that can be harmful to them. We are the only species that drinks another animal's milk. Milk is supposed to help baby cows grow 50% faster, we don't need that! At the rate we are going, by 2048 all fish in the ocean will be extinct, and that means the end of the human race.
Among other places, California is in a major drought right now, and it definitely doesn't help when people water their lawns 5 times a day, or let their sprinklers spray the sidewalk. Get a cactus garden! No place on earth has an infinite amount of water, yet people use water is if there were. The water used in fracking ranges from 70-140 billion gallons per year, but that is nothing compared to the 34 trillion gallons of water used in just the US alone for animal agriculture. It takes 2,500 gallons of water for 1 pound of beef, one hamburger is equivalent to showering for 2 months. Eggs take approximately 477 gallons of water, and cheese 900 gallons.
Each second an acre of the amazon rainforest is cut down, almost entirely for cows to graze and for soybeans to grow. Animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of the destruction of the Brazilian Amazon; livestock is is responsible for over 136 million acres of lost rainforest. As soon as the rain forest goes, we go too.
I'm not telling you to become full on vegan or anything, but please be aware of what you are eating and where it comes from! Think about what the animal had to go through, and if it's really worth it. Please be aware of what you are contributing, this is our only planet. Happy earth day everyone
A lot of my information is from the movie Cowspiracy, which is incredibly eye opening. You should definitely go check it out, its available on Netflix and Youtube along with libraries and video stores and such.
(p.s. this blog turned 2 on April 5!)
Lately I have been experimenting with photographs, and in particular film photography.I took these photos on a disposable camera, and it was EXTREMELY frustrating to work with. I also recently bought a vintage film camera- but I haven't gotten any of the film developed yet. Im excited to share the images once I develop the rolls of film!
Btw- as you can tell, none of these are of me! Most of these photos are pictures i took of Simone. I also took the pictures of these photos on an iPhone camera, and they do look slightly different in real life.
The photo above is of a few photographs I painted over. There's a ton more that I will paint on as well, so i might do a follow up post on that.
Photos by Simone. Check out her instagram here:
All clothes are mine (I didn't make any)
Me- Jeans: Thrifted, Sweater: Vintage, Shoes: Vintage
Simone- Jeans: Hand me downs, Sweater: ???, Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Here's a photo Sim took of me, that I messed with a little bit. Btw, I didn't make any of the clothes :-)
I've decided to change my blog a lil bit. Right now it's a space where I primarily show clothes I've made, and nothing more. I want to expand it to be less of a portfolio, and more of a creative journal. I want to start posting clothes I didn't sew, art "stuff", and just more of my interests. I will still post garments I've made, but I just want to be able to talk about other things. This will also allow me to post more frequently. Since 2016 is very close, I think it will be nice to have a new beginning for a new year.
It's finally cooling down, and i'm not ready to admit that summer weather is over.
I was at a Rookie Year Book 4 signing, ( if you don't know what Rookie is, GO CHECK IT OUT RIGHT NOW. LIKE ASAP. IT IS THE BEST THING EVER. The link is in my sidebar!) and I got to meet Tavi Gevinson! Yay! I have been obsessed with Tavi since I think 2011, back in the Style Rookie era (also linked in my sidebar). She is such an inspiration both creatively, and as a human. Of course, once I got to meet her, I made such a fool out of myself its not even funny. :-)
Because fall is on it's way, (actually, it's already fall, oops) I've decided to dress slightly more "autumny". Im not really sure what that means yet. I made an H line dress out of a thin white velvet, and I thats what you are seeing right now. Ugh, my sentences need help.
All photos property of pauline bissell/ pauline bissell designs :-)
Hi! I'm Pauline and I like taking photos, making clothes, and talking about the environment/ feminism!
